World War 1-Poem

BAM!
WOW there it is....
Loud shots in the air
Hits the thin and restless soldiers
Tears through there skin.

Quotes From Chapter 5

Quotes from Chapter 5: All Quiet on the Western Front

For each quote, summarize the quote and comment on what is being said. Do you agree? What’s surprising about what is said? What does it remind you of?

Quote Summarize Comment

"And then what?"
A pause. Then Haie explains rather awkwardly: "If I were a non-com. I'd stay with the Prussians and serve out my time."
"Haie, you've got a screw loose, surely!" I say.
"Have you ever dug peat?" he retorts good-naturedly. "You try it."
Then he pulls a spoon out of the top of his boot and reaches over into Kropp's mess-tin.
"It can't be worse than digging trenches," I venture.
Haie chews and grins: "It lasts longer though. And there's no getting out of it either."
"But, man, surely it's better at home."
"Some ways," says he, and with open mouth sinks into a day-dream.

Haie would stay with the Prussians and do the time that he needs to do. Haie likes his job and doesn’t like digging trenches. I would probably agree with this quote because I wouldn’t want to be digging wholes either. What is surprising is that he actually likes his job and what he does. This quote reminds me of my mom because she also likes her job and enjoys working.

You can see what he is thinking. There is the mean little hut on the moors, the hard work on the heath from morning till night in the heat, the miserable pay, the dirty labourer's clothes.
"In the army in peace time you've nothing to trouble about," he goes on, "your food's found every day, or else you kick up a row; you've a bed, every week clean underwear like a perfect gent, you do your non-com's duty, you have a good suit of clothes; in the evening you're a free man and go off to the pub."
Haie is extraordinarily set on his idea. He's in love with it.
"And when your twelve years are up you get your pension and become a village bobby, and you can walk about the whole day."
He's already sweating on it. "And just you think how you'd be treated. Here a dram, there a pint. Everybody wants to be well in with a bobby."

There is hard work from morning to night. They get paid poorly. In the army there is nothing to worry about. You have to clean your clothes and then in the evening you get to go and do your own thing. When you’re a village bobby you get to walk around all day. Everyone wants to be a bobby. I would not agree with this quote because I wouldn’t want to be in the army. I would be afraid to die. Plus you don’t get paid as much. What is surprising about this quote is that they say that you shouldn’t worry when you are in the army but I think that you should worry because you will never know what is going to happen. This quote reminds me of school because you also never know what will happen at school or during school.
Kropp feels it too. "It will go pretty hard with us all. But nobody at home seems to worry much about it. Two years of shells and bombs—a man won't peel that off as easy as a sock."
We agree that it's the same for everyone; not only for us here, but everywhere, for everyone who is of our age; to some more, and to others less. It is the common fate of our generation.
Albert expresses it: "The war has ruined us for everything."
He is right. We are not youth any longer. We don't want to take the world by storm. We are fleeing. We fly from ourselves. From our life. We were eighteen and had begun to love life and the world; and we had to shoot it to pieces. The first bomb, the first explosion, burst in our hearts. We are cut off from activity, from striving, from progress. We believe in such things no longer, we believe in the war.
We sit opposite one another, Kat and I, two soldiers in shabby coats, cooking a goose in the middle of the night. We don't talk much, but I believe we have a more complete communion with one another than even lovers have.
We are two men, two minute sparks of life; outside is the night and the circle of death. We sit on the edge of it crouching in danger, the grease drips from our hands, in our hearts we are close to one another, and the hour is like the room: flecked over with the lights and shadows of our feelings cast by a quiet fire. What does he know of me or I of him? Formerly we should not have had a single thought in common— now we sit with a goose between us and feel in unison, and are so intimate that-we do not even speak.

They had to do two years of shells and bombs. It’s not easy to take all of that off your shoulders or out of your life. They think that it’s the same for everyone everywhere. It is fate for there generation. The war has ruined their lives. They are not young anymore. They believe in the war. I would probably agree with this quote because they do work hard but it is probably hard for them to give away their lives to go to war. What is surprising about this quote is that it is their generation’s fate of going to war. This quote reminds me of family because its like generations of your family should do this and that or they need to become this and make that.

Choose your own: Approximately 40 words

We remember mighty little of all that rubbish. Anyway, it has never been the slightest use to us. At school nobody ever taught us how to light a cigarette in a storm of rain, nor how a fire could be made with wet wood-nor that it is best to stick a bayonet in the belly because there it doesn’t get jammed, as it does in the ribs.

They are saying that none of the things they learned in school is useful to them now while they are in the war. I wouldn’t agree with this quote because I actually like school and I think that we actually do learn useful things in school. What is surprising about this quote is that they think that school didn’t tech them anything useful. This quote reminds me of school because some people at school are always like we aren’t learning anything or why are we doing this we are never going to use this again in our life.

Propaganda

I think that this picture is trying to recruit people to become soldiers. It is also saying that no matter what your job is everyone is needed for the war. This picture is really effective because everyone will know that they can help. I think that this picture is trying to saying that everyone can help. I also think that this picture is saying that anybody and any kind of person who have different personalities can help with this situation. This picture might also be saying that if everyone works together and helps they will win.

War Story

I am worried about my buddy Joe cause he is laying on the ground next to me. He got shot but we are still waiting for someone to come get him so he can get bandaged up. I can't believe that I am actually here in this war. I can't believe that I actually listened to my father saying "go serve you country." I feel scared and frightened because I don't want to end up like my buddy Joe. I can't wait to get out of here so I will get to see my family. My mother who is probably cooking an amazing dinner. My father who is probably thinking why did I tell him to go serve his country? My brother who is probably wondering where I am and what I am doing. I don't want to be here. I want to be at home.

Of Mice and Men Ending

1. Lennie did what he did because he didn't know any better. Lennie was scared because Curley's wife was screaming and he didn't want to get in trouble with George.
2. Curley's reaction is that he wants to go find Lennie and kill him. No I wasn't surprised because that is how I pictured Curley to be like.
3. George tells Lennie the story about how they are going to get rabbits and a house of there own and also George trys to keep Lennie looking across the river.
4. George did what he did because he wanted Lennie to die happy and not have him get into anymore trouble.
5. I think that its sad that George killed Lennie but yes I think that it was right for George to do what he did because now Lennie won't be getting in so much trouble and he died happily.
6. I think Steinbeck is trying to say that when you are in a lot of pain then you should be careful or when you get into to much trouble just watch you back. I think what Steinbeck is saying about people like Lennie or people in general is that people should always be careful because you never know what might happen in you life.

Best Friend

I have a friend and her name is Adrian. She is my best friend. Adrian is I would say about 5`5 white female. Her personality is unique and outgoing. Adrian and I tell each other everything. We tell each other secrets and things that happen during the day since we go to different schools. She will keep your secrets if you tell her not to tell anyone. She goes to Blanchet High School and I go to Shorewood High School. Adrian can be quite goofy at times. Adrian likes to wear black clothes and a lot of make-up. She is really outgoing because sometimes she is just out there and just shouts out.

Tomorrow Will Be A Better Day- questions 1-4

1. How Rettenberg hooks the reader is by describing his lifestyle and how his dad feels. What is happening is that the different lifestyles are changing and his dad is worried about how they are changing and what will happen to his son.
2. Some specifics that Rittenberg use to emphasize how older generations saw horrible things in their lifetimes is by describing the different generations such as internet and a cure for AIDS.
3. Rittenberg use specifics to demonstrate his hopefulness by describing the different generations and how our generation will get worse such as the middle east finding peace.
4. He uses the tittle to prove his point by at the end he said that his father would always say tomorrow will be a better day and then he wanted to say that to his father when he was angry. Also Rettenberg described the different situations in the different generations such as killer flu, segregation, and a nuclear bomb.

Reading-The Devil Wears Prada

Ariel Smith
Period 5
10/23/07

Today I was reading The Devil Wears Prada and I am only on Chapter 1 so far. This book is interesting so far. First of all I saw the movie first and now I am reading the book. The movie was really good at least that’s what I thought. So I think that the book will be good too. I am a slow reader and so I haven’t really read all that much. So far what I have read is that there is this girl named Andreah and she just got a new job in New York with a famous magazine. In the beginning of this book she is driving a stick shift convertible, which is her bosses car, and she doesn’t really know how to drive a stick shift. Her boss is the meanest person alive at least that what everybody thinks. That is how far I have gotten in this book so far. I am excited to read more.

How To Pitch Questions

1. He got the author to stop overthinking on the mound by Bryan emphasizing a quiet head in the physical sense.
2. Bryan believed that it was better to learn a change-up first because it would be easier on the authors elbow and because mastering a change-up is what separates the throwers from the pitchers.
3. By imagining that you are making an OK sign and wrapping it around the ball.
4. A change-up works because the slight difference and deception is enought to upset the batters timing and balance, tricking the batter into swinging to early.
5. What makes a good pitching coach is by turning his pitchers into self-coaches.

1. What we can learn from the pitching coach that could translate to how we learn in school or with writing is maybe by making ourselves become better writers or listeners.
2. The equivalent of a change-up in writing is probably writing in general because you have to think of what you want to say and what you want to write about.
3. What I think the author is saying is that you can fail in many ways, when your on a roll you are just making mistakes, because you are going to have a meltdown, the thing Bryan teaches is not to win all the time but to show yourself when you fail.

Show Don't Tell

1. The party had music. It was called the Electric Slide. The people dancing to the Electric Slide were all dancing the same dance. They would go back and forth, then they would do a grape vine.
2. I walked into the classroom and there on my desk was a piece of paper. Then I sat down at my desk and turned the paper over. On my paper there was a big A in red. I started texting all my friends saying that I got an A on my test because I was extremly excited.
3. I went into the classroom and there he was the coolest teacher ever. Playing oldies music and sitting in his chair.
4. Its white with an apple on it. I take it everywhere and it goes with me where ever I go. We do everything together. It looks important information up for me and it loads my pictures. Its my best friend ever.
5. I had nothing to do. I just sat there. No TV, no ipod. I just sat there doing nothing.

Brain Candy Reaction

I would say that I think video games and TV could sometimes be good and sometimes be bad for you. It could sometimes be good because you are using your brain and you are learning new things on the TV. I would say that I agree but I also disagree. I agree because video games and TV are sometimes good for you because like I said you learn new things in the news which happens to be on the TV and some video games such as tetris I think would help your brain and how you think because you have to think. So I guess in the end I would agree with what the author is saying because I think that TV and video games could make you smarter. I think that it all depends on what you watch on TV and what video games you play. So I would say yes he is probably right about video games and TV making you smarter because I actually think that TV and video games do make you smarter. Scientists should probably test this theory. Therefore, I agree with the author and I think that video games and TV could possibly make you smarter just depending on what you watch and what video game you play.

My Reading

Well, I brought a book today but I didn't read that book because I wanted to catch up on my reading for Anthem. So what I read in Anthem today is how Equality was in the enchanted forest and then Liberty found him in the forest. Then they walked together in the forest and they eventually found this house in the enchanted forest. This house was interesting to them because they really hadn't seen that much light in a room before and they hadn't seen an actual house before. So they were really excited and really interested to find out more about this house that they had found in the forest. That is how far I have read so I can't really say much more. I would like to say that I have really enjoyed reading this book. This book is really exciting and keeps me thinking about what is going to happen next.

technology

Ariel Smith
Period 5
9/14/07

What Equality tries to do at the Hall of Scholars is show his box of light to the Council. He showed his box of light to them because he wanted to show that he had discovered a new thing that nobody else had discovered yet. What Equality expects to happen is that they will forget about his crime and him breaking all the rules and they will just be ok with it and let him show his discovery and let him get credit for what he has discovered. What happens is that the Council is angry and mad at him for breaking all the rules and doing something without permission so the Council is trying to decide what to do with Equality and the box or light. The Council decides to banish the box or light but then right when they said that Equality grabs the box and jumps out the window and just runs until he reaches the uncharted forest. The Council of the Candle matter here because they are the ones who came up with candles and if they allow this box of light witch is electricity and that would mean not more candles. I think what Rand is trying to say about why this society has such low technology is they are kind of old fashion and they use things that are man made. They have such low technology because they don’t use the high technology things like computers, cell phones, TV, or electricity. I personally think that we should accept all new technology. Yes there are sometimes when we should probably say no. For example there are so many new cell phones and games coming out.
